Criteria
- Average or above-average learning potential as determined by admissions criteria
- A history of problems that have interfered with academic and/or social success
- No history of major behavior problems
- Grades 1 through 12
Procedures
- Applications are accepted throughout the school year as space permits.
- Parents submit the completed application, school records and teacher evaluations. If available, they submit a recent comprehensive psycho-educational evaluation.
- The director and/or school psychologist meet with the parents. After a review of the materials provided, a decision is made to continue the admission process into TLCS or to suggest other services.
- If the decision is made to continue the admissions process, the student is asked to attend the TLCS for one to two days to allow the teacher an evaluation period to see how the student feels about the school and how s/he interacts with other students. At the end of this period the teacher is asked to submit the report form to the school psychologist.
- If TLCS is the recommendation, it will be determined whether or not a comprehensive psycho-educational evaluation is needed to more thoroughly understand the child's difficulties. If one is not available, the educational psychologist at TLC, or a psychologist designated by the TLC, undertakes this assessment.
- The TLCS Admission Committee then meets to review the results and formulate recommendations. This team consists of the TLC director, the school principal, the school psychologist and other specialists as needed (ESL, reading, speech and language, etc) and the teacher whose class the student attended.
- Acceptance is either probationary or non-probationary and under certain circumstances can be considered to be conditional.
If it is determined that the student does not need a comprehensive evaluation and that an admission screening will suffice, then the parents are only informed as to whether the child was accepted. No discussion is provided as to what the findings were or what problems the teacher, etc. observed. In the event that a parent desires this, then it becomes a comprehensive evaluation and an additional fee is charged.
After Admission
Once within the program, children receive services based on their Alternative Educational Plan (AEP). This document is created by the TLC specialists and is reviewed by the Principal. It is based on the body of evaluations conducted thus far, outlining the current skill levels, defining measurable objectives, and providing a baseline for improvements.
The Student Affairs Officer will inform the parent of the decision. If a discussion is requested, the parent will be referred to either the school psychologist or the director.
