Speech/Language

Speech and Language Therapist / Pathologist:

Speech and language therapy is provided using both a consultation model and small group therapy service model within the classroom. The speech and language therapist/pathologist works with the classroom teacher on issues such as phonological processing, auditory discrimination and other issues that impede the child's ability to effectively learn. The speech therapist and/or pathologist will work individually with students occasionally as needed.

The speech and language therapist/pathologist consults with the classroom teacher and assists in designing lesson plans that enhance the student's learning. This model encourages teacher participation and allows the teacher to follow through in the classroom with the program initiated by the therapist. This also allows the speech and language therapist or pathologist to work with a greater number of students and encourages interaction, modeling and practice of speech. Interventions are provided in both Arabic- and English-speaking classrooms.

The speech pathologist is also seen as an integral part of the initial evaluation process for possible admission to TLCS. Speech and language needs are assessed and assistance to the psychologist is provided to determine if the student's language concerns are related to English as a second language acquisition or whether it is a processing issue in both languages.
